HEDLAND AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB wish to announce:

Due to the development of TC Monty and the fact that the Town of Port Hedland was on BLUE ALERT, no swimming was allowed to take place on Saturday 28^th February 2004.

The BLUE ALERT was lifted that afternoon at 4.00pm.  The Regional Coordinators & Officials agreed to reorganise the event into a one-day program starting at 6.00am the following morning, Sunday the 29^th February 2004. Through the night, Hedland experienced torrential rain, thunder and lightning, which continued into Sunday morning 29^th February. 

At 6.30am on the Sunday morning the Regional Coordinators met; from this, the decision was handed down that SunSmart Swimming Country Pennants 2004 was cancelled.

The decision was based on the health, safety and welfare of the 700 or more competitors, volunteers and officials.  The Aquatic Centre was not equipped to shelter the participants and conditions experienced over  night meant that the Carnival would have had to be continuously stopped throughout the day.  By calling this cancellation early in the day it allowed all visiting teams enough time to vacate Port Hedland while the roads were open and safe to travel through.

HEDLAND AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB would like to take this opportunity in thanking all Competitors, volunteers and Officials who made the journey to Port Hedland only to return home without competing.
